Bahamas sports tourism has been soaring in recent times and the Tourism Ministry is optimistic about it and wants to take it the next level. For different international events, Northern Bahamas was tailor-made. Off late, MOTGB’s Sports Tourism Department has planned to introduce a new platform for those interested in planning sporting events in the coming days.
Pelican Bay Hotel, the first Northern Bahamas Sports Symposium will be, “dedicated to informing sports leaders or those interested in planning sporting events” on April 1st. To quote Sports Tourism Manager Nuvolari Chotoosingh, ‘’this is very important for us.
Moving forward on Grand Bahama Island, Bimini and Abaco in particular, because we wish to have those associations’ leadership aware of the various aspects of not just putting on an event; but putting on an event at a world-class level. We can no longer put on a sporting event for putting on a sporting event’s sake.
It has to make sense, because Sports Tourism right now is the hot word for tourism around the world, and we can see that with the number of events that The Bahamas has been putting on internationally, particularly on the island of New Providence. Wealth has to be spread here. We have to help islands such as Grand Bahama, Abaco and Bimini grow their aspects of Sports Tourism.
In order to do this, we have to have partnerships. It’s not enough for the Ministry of Tourism to just be a sponsor. We need partnership from the private sector; we need partnership from the public sector in addition to the organizations of the various sporting bodies.’’
