The fifth leg of the urban gatherings of daily Hürriyet and Turkish Travel Agencies Union (TÜRSAB) had Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as one of the main destinations. As expressed by a journalist, these gatherings at city, region and country were aimed in order to and see, explore, understand and write about these attractions and bring it to the forefront.
As the journalist says, in 1981 he visited Turkish Cyprus for the first time. The incident that affected the journo was how Turkish Cypriots would severely criticize each other in rallies during the day of the Presidential election and share the same table in the evening, talking and joking in a friendly way. Political differences never marred civilized relations between them. He says that this type of situation, especially in Turkey, were not quite common in those days.
Decades after that, as explained by the journalist, closely monitoring the Cyprus issue and exploring the island several times, discovered that Turkish Cyprus had to live a life of isolation, blockade and pressure amidst many injustices. As mentioned in the referendum 2004, Turkish Cypriots accepted the U.N.’s Annan Plan while Greek Cypriots discarded it.
