KiwiRail today reaffirmed its commitment to continuing and growing its Auckland-Wellington scenic train service, as the Northern Explorer made its first departure from its new downtown Auckland base at Ngaoho Place, just off The Strand.
Head of Customer Engagement and Scenic Journeys, Gavin Rutherford says KiwiRail is focusing on growing its market share of New Zealand’s flourishing tourism industry. “KiwiRail has seen a steady increase in Northern Explorer patronage over the last few years and we’re committed to continuing the service.”
“Our Scenic Journeys services are high up on tourists’ to do lists and the Coastal Pacific and Tranz Alpine experiences are also enjoying improved numbers,” says Mr Rutherford. “Passengers numbers on both the Northern Explorer and Coastal Pacific were up 20% on the previous year and the Tranz Alpine passenger train experienced growth of 10% on the previous year.”
Over the last few years KiwiRail had upgraded the overall customer experience across its tourism services, Mr Rutherford said.
“We’ve introduced the new AK carriages across the Scenic Journeys fleet and improved our menus as well as upgrading the on-board facilities for passengers on our Interislander services.”
“Setting-up our own purpose-built facility at The Strand marks KiwiRail’s commitment to continue running the Northern Explorer service and ensures we’re not impacted by the planned Britomart redevelopment works over the next few years. We don’t expect this move to affect passenger numbers and are planning to develop the station area over the coming months.”
From Monday 21 December all Northern Explorer arrivals and departures will be at Ngaoho Place. All customers have been advised of the change.
