Norwegian-Air-ShuttleNorwegian, the World’s Best Low-Cost Long-Haul Airline for a third consecutive year and Europe’s Best Low-Cost Airline for the fifth year in a row, today took delivery of two of its 110 737 MAX-8 aircraft on order from Boeing. The airline will take delivery of an additional four MAX aircraft this year.

“We have been eagerly awaiting the delivery of our Boeing 737 MAX, and we are overjoyed to have it join our fleet today. We are the first European airline to operate this brand-new aircraft, and we’re also the first airline in the world to operate it to/from the United States. This aircraft allows us to open up new, unserved routes and offer both Americans and Europeans even more affordable transatlantic fares. It will also provide our passengers with a quieter onboard experience, whilst it significantly reduces both fuel use and carbon dioxide emissions,” said Bjørn Kjos, Norwegian’s Chief Executive Officer.

Mr. Kjos and several members of the media were onboard the maiden flight from Seattle’s Boeing Field delivery center to Oslo Airport. Additionally, the airline auctioned 12 seats to aviation enthusiasts to join this exclusive flight. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to UNICEF, Norwegian’s signature corporate citizenship partner.

“The 737 MAX 8 is a significant addition to Norwegian’s fleet, enabling the airline to start the next chapter in its incredible growth story of low-cost, long-haul travel,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ President and CEO, Kevin McAllister. “It is a tremendous honor that a brand as innovative as Norwegian will be the first European carrier to fly the 737 MAX, and we are certain that this airplane will play a key role in its continued success.”

The new 737 MAX will take flight later this summer, and the six aircraft will operate 12 routes between the northeastern U.S. and Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Norway. Routes were launched in February with $65 one-way fares, including taxes. Fares on these new routes are currently available at for as low as $99 one-way, including taxes. The lowest fares to all of Norwegian’s destinations can be found by using the airline’s low fare calendar.

Norwegian will station four of the six new 737 MAX aircraft in the U.S. at its new bases at Stewart International Airport in New York and Providence’s T.F. Green Airport, Rhode Island. This will be Norwegian’s third and fourth U.S. bases; the airline currently has bases at JFK International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The carrier now has almost 600 American employees –a number expected to double soon.

Norwegian currently offers 52 transatlantic flights from 13 U.S. airports to Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom, as well six routes to the French Caribbean, totaling 58 routes out of the United States. Upcoming launches from the U.S. include: Newburgh/Stewart to Dublin (July 1); Newburgh/Stewart to Shannon (July 1); Providence to Bergen (July 1); Providence to Dublin (July 1); Newburgh/Stewart to Bergen (July 2); Providence to Shannon (July 2); Newburgh/Stewart to Belfast (July 3); Providence to Belfast (July 3); Providence to Cork (July 3); Orlando to Paris (July 31); Fort Lauderdale to Barcelona (August 22); Denver to London (September 16); Seattle to London (September 17); Providence to Guadeloupe (October 29); Providence to Martinique (October 30); Fort Lauderdale to Martinique (October 30); New York/Newark to Rome (November 9); Los Angeles to Rome (November 11); and Oakland/San Francisco to Rome (February 6, 2018).
