According to the preliminary investigation by the New York Police Department (NYPD) bomb squad, the blast was caused either by a homemade explosive or by an experiment with fireworks.
The Deputy Chief of NYPD, John O’Connell informed at a news conference on Sunday that there was no evidence of a constructed device or commercial-grade firework. He also informed that there were no credible threats directed at New York during the celebration of 4th of July.
According to O’Connell, many people try to make completely unadvisable homemade fireworks during 4th July. Witnesses stated that the blast rippled the entire park like a cannon.
The victim was a tourist from northern Virginia, who was visiting the park with two of his friends. Sunday, before 11am, the three of them jumped off a rocky surface inside the park, which triggered the explosion. NYPD estimated that Connor possibly stepped on the explosive, which blew his foot.
The boy was transported to the Bellevue Hospital after the explosion. He was reported to be serious but stable. The NYPD did not consider those three boys as suspects.
The NYPD guessed that the explosive was possibly in the park from Saturday, 2nd July.
According to NYPD bomb squad officer Lt. Mark Torre, “This is clearly explosive material. But there’s nothing to indicate that this was an explosive device that was placed or put in this area with a specific intent to harm any individuals.”
At present, the explosive from the scene is being tested at a bomb lab.
