Both of these towns are now New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) Motor Home Friendly Towns. Association are of opine that this will eventually bolster tourism.
Harry Davy, chairman of the Taranaki Area NZMCA, expressed that this was one of the techniques to attract more visitors to the towns.
“As you well and truly know the Lonely Planet is pushing Taranaki as the number two place in the world,” Davy said.
“So this again is going to be beneficial to Hawera, to Opunake, taking motorhomes in.”
To quote Bruce Lochore, NZCMA CEO, “For Hawera and Opunake, official recognition as motorhome friendly will encourage more of our members and international visitors to stop, stay and spend,” Lochore said.
“And for motorhomers, the towns’ status as motorhome friendly is a clear indication that they can expect a warm welcome.”
Davy also added by saying that from now, events which are running in these two towns would be available on a website. This website is now on offer for the NZCMA’s 74,000 individual members and general public as well.
“Our motorhomers will see it, and they’ll be pouring in,” he said. “To encourage more attendance at such events, we have initiated a calendar of activities and events – which we have worked with to ensure they all offer free or low-cost overnight parking nearby – to promote to our members. This offers a great opportunity for communities like Hawera and Opunake to jump on board with their events and share in the benefits.”
