However there were more than 500 people who had been cremated in Puerto Rico due to the severe landfall that took place a month ago.
There were around 911 bodies that got cremated without undergoing examination by a government medical officer for being considered in the official death toll from the storm.
The cause of death was listed as ‘natural causes’ and the official death toll did not take into account the deaths that took place due to the deadly hurricane.
Official entry of the death toll is essential as the victims’ families can claim federal relief, it also reveals how effective the efforts have been.
The Puerto Rico’s Department for Public Safety said that names would only be added if the Institute of Forensic Sciences confirmed.
The cremation of the 911 was permitted after being reviewed by the records but a government medical officer confirmed that the bodies were not examined.
The funeral home and crematorium directors mentioned that they did not receive any official guidance with the instruction of directing the suspected hurricane victims to the institute. The government confirmed that it did not issue any such guidance.
