Pacific Island is all geared up to represent itself as a luxury destination by proposing new regulations that would allow only development of five-star hotels in the coming years, as confirmed by President Tommy Remengesau. For this reason, the President is offering tax breaks for high investors, provided they sort out building roads, water treatment systems and other infrastructure needs for the resort. Tourism is one of the major industries that Palau relies heavily on.
However, locals are complaining about this huge rush of visitors at Palau, which eventually is causing damage to the coral reefs, wildlife due to overcrowding. Chinese tour groups have been the highest number of visitors, and the government also announced in 2015 that they would increase the number of chartered flights coming from China.
The President says that Palau is always keen on attracting the big spenders. At the same time, he wants to respect the natural environment of the island. To quote the President, “There’s a right way to do things and there’s a wrong way to do things,” adding that when it comes to development, “the best spots around the world have blended in with the environment.”
