The history of Pals Golf Course goes back to 1966, the year it opened its doors with the aim of making it a social and cultural meeting place. Over time, it has succeeded in establishing itself as one of the best greens in Spain, it has hosted numerous international sports competitions and its design and construction have bestowed it with great artistic value. It is now at its high point and has celebrated its 50-year history by recognising the efforts of those who fervently believe in this project and have continued its legacy.
Since March, Pals Golf Course has been immersed in its programme of leisure and sports activities aimed at celebrating its five decades of history. The Catalonia Grand Prix or the culinary workshops that celebrate the Year of Golf and the Enogastronomy are just two of the events that have taken place this year.
This sporting venue was keen to celebrate its 50th anniversary as the oldest golf course on the Costa Brava, a veritable symbol of the high society of the time, and today considered one of the most important greens in Europe and Spain due to its excellent facilities.
On Saturday 2 July, at the Arenals de Mar estate, the presentation took place of the ten awards that recognise the efforts made during these five decades by all who have committed themselves to this project, and for which its Chairman, Baltasar Parera Coll, expressed his deepest thanks.
Institutions, public administrations, the tourist industry, sports federations, associates and subscribers of the course attended the presentation of the awards by the President of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont.
The first commendation was given to Fred W. Hawtree, the architect of the course. He was honoured posthumously for his work in designing over 80 projects worldwide and renovating 400 others.
Another of the personalities to receive an award was Santiago Fisas Mulleras, the first President of the Club and the course’s top promoter. The relatives of the famous entrepreneur and sportsman received the award in his name.
Attorney at law Joan Gassiot Calvet was also rewarded for drawing up the first statutes of the company owning the green and for his role as Secretary of the Board of Directors.
Another of the distinctions was awarded to Jaume Darné Parals. He personally supervised the entire construction of the 18 holes of the golf course in record time and was one of the three founding partners of the company and the attorney of the Parera-Coll matrimony.
Josep Gual Moliner was the constructor and the mayor of the town of Begur. He was in charge of building the current Golf Club House and promoted this sport in the other municipalities.
The ex-mayor of Pals, Pere Servià Costa, was also rewarded for having carried on the support given to the golf course by his father, Pere Servià Cantó.
Joan Martí Farró received recognition for his efforts as one of the most active disseminators and promoters of Platja de Pals, along with attorney at law Fernando Labastida Nicolau, for continuing the work undertaken by his predecessor.
Neither has Pals Golf Club forgotten the various associations and public administrations which have worked to promote and disseminate it and establish its standing. In this regard, it is important to highlight Pals Golf Society, which has effectively promoted this course among the many foreign players and whose members have been excellent ambassadors. Also, the Mayor of Pals, Silvia Monar, received the award in recognition and gratitude for all the families of Pals and its surrounding area who made the construction of this course possible.
At the ceremony, the Chairman of Pals Golf Club, Baltasar Parera was also recognised for his efforts by the Chairman of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, Gonzaga Escauriaza, the Vice-Chairman of the Catalan Golf Federation, Ramón Nogué, the Board of Directors of El Prat Royal Golf Club, represented by Santiago García-Nieto and the Chairman of Llavaneras Golf Club, Jaime Lozoya.
Of course, the activities on the green will continue over the weeks and months to come. 29 and 30 July will see the holding of the 50th Anniversary Callaway Golf Tournament, which is expected to be attended by a large number of sportspeople and golf lovers. And on 1 October, Pals Golf Club will host the Invitation Tournament for Members of the Golfy Network. The following month, on 26 November, the 50th Anniversary Christmas Tournament will take place.
This is a competition aimed at the subscribers and shareholders of this course, and it will put the finishing touch to the events programmed during the fiftieth anniversary.
