The first incident occurred on 22nd November around 12:15 pm local time, when a 71-year-old female American traveller was killed after getting hit by a truck during a cycling tour. The accident took place at the intersection of Te Awanui Dr and Mirrielees Rd in Tauranga. None of the other cruise-shippers was injured during the accident.
On the very same day, another accident occurred when a Bethlehem Coachlines bus full of cruise ship passengers crashed with a car around 11:30 am local time near the intersection with Stopford Rd on the State Highway 29. As the bus was equipped with safety features, none of the passengers was critically injured. The passengers were later sent to the Celebrity Solstice in another bus. It was found that the driver of the car was fatally injured in the accident.
According to Kristin Dunne, Bay of Plenty Tourism chief executive, the safety and wellbeing of tourists in the region is of the utmost importance and their concern is with the victims and supporting the investigations that are underway.
The representative officer of Cruise New Zealand, Kevin O’Sullivan informed that it was just such an unfortunate set of circumstances for an otherwise happy event.
The crew members of Celebrity Solstice extended their support to the passengers, the family members of the deceased traveller and the local police.
It was not clear whether the cruise would stay at Tauranga for another night or not.
