Peace through tourism gains currency at WTM

wtm world responsible tourism day 2013Among various efforts towards world peace this was also one worth noting. The South Asia panel of International Institute of Peace through Tourism’ initiative at World Travel Mart (WTM) London this year could be a harbinger of good news if the momentum isn’t allowed to lose momentum.

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) projected that with the growth rate of 6.7
per cent South Asia will outperform all other global sub-regions. The irony is that despite
these delightful projections, the climate for cooperation, trust and a healthy coming together of joint efforts for tourism remains a pipe dream in many ways in this part of the world.

On the sidelines of the World Travel Market (WTM) this year at London, an interesting
effort was made at a session by the South Asia panel of International Institute of Peace
through Tourism (IIPT), where tourism industry leaders were given a platform to stir the pot of a peace brew.

IIPT, a US-based non-profit organisation, since it’s founding in 1986, has brought together
global leaders from all sectors of the travel and tourism industry, as well as culture,
environment and development. Three Global Conferences, Vancouver (1988), Montreal
(1994), Glasgow (1999); and a series of smaller conferences, round tables, and seminars,
provided the foundations for the First Global Summit on Peace through Tourism held in
Amman, Jordan, November 2000, after which it has annually held such conferences at
various destinations to promote the objective of peace through tourism.

The special session at this year’s WTM, moderated by Michael Stolowitzky, President of
American Tourism Society, had a fair share of dignitaries from the region and an eager
audience waiting to hear them.
