file.oPenang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) is proud to announce that we are co-organising the George Town Literary Festival (GTLF) 2016. GTLF 2016 marks PCEB’s diversification into the major events sector, a short 11 months since the Bureau’s inception. As the festival continues to grow with each edition, GTLF 2017 will be produced and organised by PCEB, Penang’s State Bureau for business and major events.

Proclaimed as “One of the best literary festivals in the world” by Man Asian Prize winner Tan Twan Eng, GTLF returns this year from 25 – 27 November with the festival’s largest line-up of local and international writers and poets.

The three-day festival helmed by Festival Director Bernice Chauly will see panel discussions, readings, conversations, spoken word performances, dance and film screenings, all dealing with the festival’s theme; “Hiraeth”, the Welsh word which means “the longing for a homeland that is no longer there”.

GTLF 2016’s stellar line-up of world literary giants and respected social commentators include the eminent British philosopher and author of over 30 books, AC Grayling; one of the most acclaimed voices in Dutch letters, Adriaan van Dis; beloved Indonesian author, Ayu Utami; celebrated Flemish writer Stefan Hertmas; award-winning Indian playwright/filmmaker, Mahesh Dattani; American/Arab writer and poet Natalie Handal; Russian/German writer Olga Martynova, Indian dancer and poet, Tishani Doshi; Thai writer and publisher Prabda Yoon, and many more.

This year’s keynote address will be delivered by leading Malaysian feminist activist and writer Zainah Anwar, with headlining Malaysian writers including National Laureate of Malaysia Muhammad Haji Salleh, Tash Aw, Faisal Tehrani, Dina Zaman and Karim Raslan.

GTLF 2016 audiences can also expect book launches, writing workshops in various genres, and dance performances by Penang’s dance maestro Aida Redza and the celebrated Malaysian-born, Vancouver-based Lee Su-Feh.

This year, the festival will introduce a Pop-Up Market that will showcase home-grown entrepreneurs selling gourmet food, artisanal coffee, wine, art and jewellery.

GTLF 2016 is produced by Penang Institute and is supported by the Penang State Government, Penang Global Tourism, Gerakbudaya Bookshop Penang, British Council, Goethe-Institut, Canada Council, Indian Centre for Cultural Relations, South Australia Writers Network, State Chancellery of Berlin, Culture Ireland, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Embassy of Belgium, Maya Press, Battery Opera, University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, New College of the Humanities (London), Singapore Writers Festival, Penang Development Corporation, Firefly and more.
