Lim Guan Eng who is the chief minister of Penang stated that the sector is developing rapidly and might create high economic value for the state.
He told in a press conference that last year this area had recorded about 1,250 meetings that had been able to generate RM808 million economic value and therefore they are hopeful that this year the RM1 billion mark can be broken off easily. This had taken place after 6th April was announced as the Penang Meetings Industry Day.
Lim had signed a proclamation to dedicate 6th April as the Penang Meetings Industry Day with an aim to promote the industry.
He said that the industry had created jobs, generated revenue and spurred the local economy. G. Ashwin who is the chief executive officer of Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) said that the Penang Meetings Industry Day is conducted to highlight the significance of the meetings and exhibitions industry.
He went on to add that the event, convention and trade show in Penang would usher in new visitors that would generate and additional amount of revenue for the state and also the country.
Penang is the second state in Malaysia that has a convention bureau to promote itself as an outstanding destination for MICE.
