The Carnival of Lircay is an expression of cultural identity from the Andean central Huancavelica region which takes place takes place annually on the first week of February in the district of the same name.
The festival reflects the fusion of cultures and costumes from Europe and Peru’s central hinterlands and showcases the traditional dances performed by the local population which were created by their ancestors.
During the celebration women wear masks, white blouses, black shoes and embroidered skirts while men wear rubber boots and ponchos, straw hats, scarf and masks.
This year, Peru’s National Institute of Culture (INC) also declared Huancavelica’s Carnival of Churcampa, an agricultural festivity celebrating ground fertility, as Cultural Heritage of the Nation.
