Peru has been selected as the World’s Leading Culinary Destination in 2016 for the fifth consecutive year by the World Travel Awards (WTA). The WTA is touted as the “Oscars” of tourism, which has designated Peru as the best country in the world for gastronomy for the fifth year, since the awards were introduced in 2012. It has consistently beaten other culinary giants like China, France, India, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Thailand and the United States. Held in the Maldives on Friday, the WTA announced the winners of over 150 awards in the awards ceremony.
Peru’s tourism board said, “Without a doubt, this award which consolidates our position as a global gastronomic destination would not be possible without the joint work between the state and the private sector, an alliance that seeks to revalue the entire productive chain of this important industry in the country.” The board has recently graduated 50 young chefs to keep on the tradition of culinary arts and advertisement of Peruvian cuisine in other countries.
Some typical Peruvian cuisine include ceviche, Lima-style potato casserole and rice with duck and these have been promoted abroad by celebrity chefs like Gaston Acurio and Virgilio Martinez over the last 10 years. While Peru won the Leading Culinary Destination on a global scale, the WTA selected Peru as South America’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination and PromPeru as South America’s Leading Tourist Board in 2016. The World’s Leading Cultural City Destination went to St. Petersburg, Russia.
