Philippines has the potential to become a sports-tourism hub

philippines-its-more-funPhilippines will be marketed as a sports-tourism hub in Asia by the Department of Tourism (DOT) to attract more international events and to encourage more scuba-diving fanatics to visit the country. Philippines has great potential to become a sought-after adventure travel destination and the country’s natural attractions and love of sports of the Filipinos’ gives it a competitive edge in the fast-growing niche sports tourism market.


Surfing is a principal sport of Philippines and the upcoming 11 th Surfing Break from October 28 to 30 is expected to attract a large number of domestic and foreign travelers. According to UNWTO, sports tourism is a $600-billion market, and is projected to grow at 6% annually till 2021. Hence, surfing as an Olympic sport is expected to recharge the local tourism industry and establish its sustainability and possibility.


For boosting Philippines as a sports tourism hub, international boxing bouts are also being considered. The next UNWTO conference on tourism and sports is also on the wish list of DOT, which was held this year at Da Nang, Vietnam. Marine sports tourism along with diving is among Philippines’ main tourism products and they can drive tourism growth in the country.
