Stakeholders in the Philippines seem to be quite dissatisfied with the function of the tourism secretary who apparently laid less focus on tourism. They feel that the new government needs to have a tourism secretary who will develop the infrastructure with Department of Transportation and Communication [DOTC], Department of Public Works and Highways [DPWH],” said Network of Independent Travel Agencies (NITAS) chairman Robert Lim Joseph.
The Cebu Association of Tour Operators (CATO) president Edilberto Mendoza said that what the tourism players would like the new government to address “our infrastructure and transportation. We need to upgrade and level up to meet international standards.”
Philippine tourism board is facing a lot of uncertainty and the stakeholders are not sure whether any preference will be given to tourism at all unless a new secretary is appointed.
The stakeholders have pointed out various places that need immediate attention for boosting tourism in the state. They also feel that the new secretary if appointed should immediately connect with stake holders and this will help eliminate loopholes and amend relevant and sustainable administrative and marketing strategies as well as come up with a six-year plan for coordinated marketing efforts for the hotels and carriers. The secretary should also review the usage of the grants on previous occasions and Madrid Fusion investments and the MICE Program.
