The Etihad Airways flight was taxiing on the runway at Manchester Airport when the grandparents received a text message saying their grandson was in intensive care.
The couple had been on their way to Australia via Abu Dhabi.
As they informed the cabin crew about the message, the pilot aborted take-off at the last minute and returned to the gate, where the couple disembarked and collected their baggage.
Quick-thinking Etihad Airways staff found the couple’s car and had it waiting for them as they left the airport.
The elderly couple managed to reach the hospital and spend the last minutes with their grandson who sadly died the next day.
Becky Stephenson, the couple’s travel agent, posted the account on the Travel Gossip Facebook page, where the airline received widespread praise for its actions.
