Due to a planned strike scheduled to begin on Wednesday May 22 and to continue till May bank holiday weekend  passengers flying from Heathrow Airport will not be able to have inflight food or drink.

Drivers for Alpha LSG, an aircraft catering firm will walk out from 00.01 on Wednesday 22 May until 23.59 on Sunday 26 May.

During the busy end of May bank holiday weekend the strike would disrupt the supply of food, drink and duty free products for 29 international airlines.

Qatar Airways, Qantas, American Airlines, Etihad and Singapore Airlines will be among the affected operators.

In order to punish the new rosters Unite members are walking out as employees claim that it affected their health and personal lives.

According to the union drivers have to work five to six weeks before getting a weekend off while some of the drivers were working on an extra 25 days a year.

It is expected that the strike would cause ‘major disruption’ to many international airlines .
Unite regional officer, Jayesh Mistry said that Alpha LSG at Heathrow has imposed a punishing new shift pattern on its drivers.

The workers’ well being was affected due to the new rosters and the company was treating workers with contempt by trying to force them to work an extra 12 weekends a year.
He went on saying that it was an attack on family life and the drivers were fighting back. They are getting shorter rest breaks, plus increased workloads are piling pressure on the workforce.

A spokesperson for Alpha LSG stated that new roster patterns are required to meet the operational needs of their current business which are based on flight schedules.

They were in discussions for over six months with local union representatives. They had held meetings with drivers and taken on board comments about the work rosters, making alterations in line with some of the feed-back.

Earlier Unite never raised concerns the work-life balance to this work pattern, until it was introduced across their entire Heathrow operation. The rest breaks in their roster meet all the legal requirements.

Heathrow will be working with airlines to ensure that adequate contingency plans were in place.
