Around 750 direct participants and an additional 100 plus affiliated persons are anticipated in Montego Bay for the three-day UNWTO Global Conference on Building Partnerships for Sustainable Tourism for Development. Minister Bartlett said this event will show what Jamaica is capable of doing and will put the city of Montego Bay on top spot.
There was an inaugural meeting and discussion held recently by Minister Bartlett, along with numerous representatives of several government ministries and agencies as well as important private sector groups and companies. They discussed plans for the upcoming conference, which will be held from November 27 to 29 at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, St. James.
Multi-sectoral planning has started for Jamaica’s hosting of this UNWTO global conference. At the inaugural meeting, a schedule of sub committees to lead various aspects of planning for a successful conference was laid out. Committee members have been chosen from various state entities which fall under the domain of the Ministries of Tourism; National Security; Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport; Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade; Labour and Social Security and Local Government to name a few.
This has been supported by representatives from private sector groups such as the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica (PSOJ); Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) and the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce.
To quote Minister Bartlett, the event will be “the single most important international event for tourism that we will host as a country to date.” He said that JHTA is the biggest local partner and will be supported by Chemonics International, the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association through Carnival and Royal Caribbean International, as well as the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank. Minister Bartlett said that this will be an event that no one has seen before!
