Assistant Police Chief Randy Blankenbaker told that a father was throwing rocks at the mother of his children outside the baggage claim area. One of the officials was able to move the woman away however, the individual came toward him again, and he discharged his weapon a number of times.
Blankenbaker did not release his name or the condition of this man however; the man was struck several times and was taken to a hospital.
The woman was unhurt; police believe no children were present at the time.
According to one of the witnesses, it appeared the man was approaching the officer with a large rock when he was shot in the early-afternoon incident.
The man was asked to “drop the rock and stop walking” however, he continued approaching the officer slowly as people came through the terminal door unaware of what was happening.
On a video posted in the social media, nine shots could be heard along with a woman crying in the background and someone screams, “get down!”
The altercation began at a car that was pulled up to the curb outside the baggage claim doors as per the police and it was then when the man sed large rocks taken from curbside landscaping to break several windows of the car.
Details about who was in the car and why the man and woman were at the airport weren’t immediately known.
The airport remained open throughout the incident, though it did prompt security screening delays.
