The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) launched its own digital Learning Toolbox today. The new digital technology aims to educate Louisiana students about the role of the local maritime industry and the port in everyday lives.

Port NOLA’s Learning Toolbox arrives at a difficult time when the world is fighting against the coronavirus pandemic. The State of Louisiana has also been issued a stay-at-home notice and is currently practicing social distancing. All schools have been ordered to remain closed until mid-April. Meanwhile, educators and parents have the opportunity to use the educational resources provided in the Toolbox to share access to information with students and children. This way the students can learn more about Port NOLA’s global connections.

Students, parents, and educators have been invited to explore the port’s four lines of business. They can also immerse themselves in videos and learn about the possible career opportunities in the Louisiana maritime industry and made possible by port activity.

Brandy D. Christian, President, and CEO, Port NOLA said in a press statement that Port NOLA and its maritime partners are proud to play an important part and act as a vital link in the global supply chain in a time filled with an unprecedented crisis. She said this can allow the continuation of essential goods reaching the communities. She added that the online student resource supports the port’s goal of providing the region’s young people with greater access to information. They can learn more about the working river especially during unusual circumstances like the one at present and beyond.

She further shared that it is important for the port to engage the local student population about the importance of the local maritime industry. They should also be aware of the types of careers generated within it. She mentioned that Port NOLA’s maritime activity generates family-supporting jobs at all skill and educational levels. She also expressed that the port wants to begin the introduction of that information to a younger audience.

Besides providing educational resources, the Learning Toolbox serves as part of Port NOLA’s growing workforce development initiatives.
