The abstract teal design carpet of Portland Airport which has become a symbol of home for Portlanders over the last 27 years continues to inspire designers around the world. Adidas has become the latest entrant with an addition to Trail Blazers’ star Damien Lillard’s line of sneakers made to resemble the iconic floor covering.
Lillard on Wednesday tweeted “Something special for my PDX fans,” dedicating the shoe design to portlanders. Interestingly, Portland is home to the German shoe maker’s North American headquarters.
Commemorating the PDX carpet, as it’s known by locals, the Portland Timbers soccer team and the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers are selling limited-edition T-shirts of the pattern in the team colors.
The Airport carpet which has been the most beloved institutions of the city is set to go, but the demise is happening in sentimental style. Already a wave of commemorative T-shirts, beer is in the offering.
The impending demise of the carpet has also inspired a Facebook page, three Twitter accounts and an Instagram account — all run independently by carpet groupies.
The widespread nostalgia for the old floor covering has been masking its overdue for a replacement. The new carpet design, created by Hennebery Eddy Architects, is yet to be loved as much though.
