Primera Air, based in Latvia will fly directly from Stansted and Birmingham to Newark, New Jersey from April 2018. They are offering the fights from UK to New York for £271 return. It will also fly to Boston.
Primera Air announced its fare as £149 each way but can be as little as £121 on the return segment. The seating to luggage and meals on board will cost extra.
Primera Air is part of the Primera Travel Group, which runs the travel agencies and tour operating companies in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Estonia.
The baggage cost will be £25 for 23 kg bag. The sea reservation starts at £22 for a regular seat, £55 for an exit row or £40 for an XL seat. Primera Air also promises “extra legroom” to “guarantee a super-enjoyable journey”.
The legroom is relative, because the XL seats have a mere 32-inch seat pitch. The same as a regular economy seat on some long haul British Airways and Virgin Atlantic planes. The standard seats get 30 inches – the same as Ryanair.
All the meals cost a flat £30 each, when prebooked, even for children and infants. Alternatively, the passengers can upgrade to a fare category that includes a checked bag, “priority” seating and a meal, for £50 each way.
But the US customers are able to book the same flights for $99, or £76 each way, which is almost half the cost of the flights for United Kingdom customers. There are no-frills in the transatlantic market, which is getting increasingly crowded.
The Norwegian Air is having the competition from Barcelona-based level. There are other airline companies, such as Wow Air, requires a stop in Reykjavik en route.
There are more transatlantic routes from Primera, which are expected to be announced by the end of the summer in the coming year.
