To quote Brenda Gallant, director of marketing for Tourism PEI, “as we know, China is really the world’s largest and fastest outgrowing travel market and I would say every country in the world is wanting to welcome Chinese visitors and Canada is absolutely no different.” In 2010, the Chinese government simplified travel restrictions on its citizens, permitting more residents to leave the country and spend their vacations elsewhere.
P.E.I. finds 1 million overnight stays, creates 4th straight tourism record.
Another record summer for P.E.I. tourism
Gallant explained that the province has been having discussions with Chinese tour operators and is working with different Atlantic Provinces in terms of direct marketing by sharing planning and resources in China.
“When we look at China, it’s quite interesting to see the growth and I know that we are not the only province looking at China at this point,” she said.
“We would be remiss if we didn’t look at opportunities to bring in some of the Chinese visitors and we really have a product that we know that they will enjoy.”
Majority of the visitors entering P.E.I. come from the United States and Canada. As per the figures from the province’s 2017 tourism indicators, Taiwan, China, Japan and England are the other top nations.
