mexicoThe US Geological Survey stated that a powerful quake struck around 12.56  a.m. local time at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The epicenter was 43 km east of Oaxaca and shockwaves were experienced as far as Mexico City as per USGS. Earthquake alarms were sounded in Mexico City that is home to nearly nine million people.

Luckily it gave time to residents to evacuate their homes and premises.

Currently there are no immediate reports of damage to building, injuries or death as a consequence of the earthquake. One of the residents of the region mentioned in a popular microblogging site that in Mexico the earthquake alarms went off all of a sudden and it offered them approximately 30 seconds to escape.

This tremor follows a 7.2 magnitude quake-hit south-western Mexico, damaging buildings but causing no deaths.

Several homes were left without power after the violent earthquake close to Pinotepa de Don Luis that is based in Oaxaca state on Friday afternoon. Though there were no immediate casualties two were killed when a helicopter carrying the interior minister of Mexico crashe3d close to the scene of the earthquake.

Mexico is still coming back from two deadly earthquakes that had strongly damaged the country last year and killed over 300 people.

Friday’s quake had shaken buildings inside the capital and sent tremors as far south as Guatemala and set off over 1,520 aftershocks.

Mexico is a hotspot for earthquakes as it is situated atop three important tectonic plates, the Pacific, Cocos and North American.
