queenslandA delegation of 35 VIP Japanese tourism trade representatives will experience some of Queensland’s best tourism and event offerings when they tour the state this week.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Kate Jones said she invited the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) Board earlier this year to meet in Queensland and to experience the state’s tourism destinations first-hand in partnership with Qantas and Tourism Australia.

“Queensland has a long-standing presence in Japan and Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) works closely with in-market trade partners each year to encourage Japanese travellers to visit Queensland,” Ms Jones said.

“It is a long-standing and important market for Queensland with 153,000 Japanese visiting the state in the year to June 2015, spending $307 million while they were here.

“In August, Qantas introduced daily direct flights from Tokyo to Brisbane, bringing up to 108,000 additional travellers to Queensland each year and an added injection of up to $64 million in expenditure.

“TEQ worked in partnership with Qantas, Tourism Australia and regional tourism organisations Brisbane Marketing and Gold Coast Tourism to promote the new route internationally.

“To build this momentum we need to develop our relationships with key Japanese travel trade partners such as those represented on the JATA Board.

“The board is made up of executives from key Japanese travel agencies and we look forward to hosting the group in Queensland this week.”

Ms Jones said the JATA Board would get a taste of visitor experiences that most appealed to Japanese travellers in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast.

“The delegation will tee off at premier golf courses and take in a number of food and wine experiences in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast,” she said.

“They will also attend a tour of the 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art, take in the view from SkyPoint Observation Deck in Surfers Paradise, enjoy a beach barbecue, animal encounters as well as nature experiences on the Gold Coast.

“In addition, the group will have a chance to meet and network with tourism operators from across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Whitsundays and Tropical North Queensland.”

The delegation will be hosted by Minister Jones and TEQ in partnership with Qantas, Tourism Australia, Brisbane Marketing, Gold Coast Tourism, and industry.
