Passengers travelling to and from Gatwick Airport over the Christmas period are being urged to carefully plan their journey and allow additional time to get to and from the airport due to major improvement works being carried out by Network Rail.
The engineering works – including the replacement of a major railway junction at Purley – will impact rail services between Gatwick and London and will require parts of the main line to be suspended between 10pm on Christmas Eve until 4am on Monday 4th January.
This means there will be no rail services between South Croydon and Redhill and the Gatwick Express will be suspended during this period. Bus replacement services will be operating between Gatwick and East Grinstead to ensure passengers can still travel by train between East Grinstead and London stations.
Alternatively, a direct train service will be operating between London Victoria and Gatwick, via Horsham, but passengers travelling by rail should expect a significantly longer journey time and should plan their journey accordingly.
Bus operators will also be running additional services to and from Gatwick over this period meaning passengers may wish to consider travelling by coach.
A Gatwick spokesperson said:
“We are working closely with transport providers and airline networks to ensure passengers are aware of how these essential works may affect their journey to and from the airport over the Christmas period.
“We recommend passengers check updates before they travel, plan their route carefully, and allow extra time if intending to travel by rail during this time.”
