2016 saw 14.9 million travelers visiting Dubai as confirmed on Tuesday by the tourism department of the city. One of the seven sheikhdoms in the UAE, Dubai aims to attract 20 million visitors to the city by 2020. Dubai prepares to host the Global Trade Fair Expo in 2020, making it a huge meet for global travelers.
Though the turmoil had engulfed North Africa and Middle East destinations, Dubai has survived by taking advantage of its reputation of being a safe haven for business as well as tourism. Great shopping malls, luxury resorts and indoor ski resort makes this desert emirate one of the sought-after places in the world.
The tourism department confirmed that Dubai had 5 percent more visitors in 2016 than last year with visitor from Gulf countries comprising 23 percent of the travelers. However, Saudis comprises half of the population of the visitors in Dubai followed by Western Europe 21 percent, Chinese 20 percent with Russian 14 percent respectively. Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest hubs for international passengers, handled more than 83.6 million travelers in 2016.
