“South Australia prides itself on our fantastic events. WOMADelaide, Adelaide Fringe, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Tasting Australia, Santos Tour Down Under, Clipsal 500, the Adelaide Fashion Festival, Liverpool FC and Adelaide United game, the World Cup Cricket and AFL matches at the redeveloped Adelaide Oval have all helped ensure visitors flock to South Australia from across the border,” he said.
“Today’s results also show there is strong demand state-wide, with both regional South Australia and Adelaide recording visitor growth.
“South Australian growth is ahead of the national growth rate. We attracted 5.7 million domestic overnight visitors – an increase of 7.7 per cent compared to the same time last year.
“This growth is above the national average of 7 per cent and South Australia’s highest figure in more than 10 years.
“There has also been strong growth from the major interstate markets of New South Wales (up 22 per cent) and Victoria (up 18 per cent).
“The State Government understands the importance of the tourism industry to the visitor economy. In the recent State Budget, $35 million was invested over two years to promote South Australia and to attract major events.
“Of the $35 million, $6 million was allocated for marketing campaigns to promote South Australia to the Australian market.
“These targeted marketing campaigns are proving successful with fantastic growth from our key markets.”
