The Red Chair visits the Orlando Museum of ArtCentral Florida’s most prolific, yet perhaps most anonymous patron of the arts will be the center of attention at a new exhibition at Orlando International Airport. For ten years, a single Red Chair has been visiting cultural venues, interacting with dancers and sharing space with public art pieces throughout Central Florida. Now, the colorful history of this highly visible ambassador will be chronicled in a selection of photos.

People, Places & Spaces features more than 60 photographs commemorating the Red Chair’s mission of cultural outreach and awareness. The pictures represent the creative vision of over 30 of the area’s best photographers and depict the Red Chair as a symbol of the arts in all their forms. The exhibit is on loan from the Orange County Arts and Cultural Alliance and will be on public display at Orlando International’s ARTport Gallery in Terminal B from Nov. 22, 2013 through March 1, 2014.

The Red Chair Project is a public service designed to increase participation in the Orlando/Central Florida arts and cultural community. It is a collaborative campaign involving arts and cultural organizations from Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia counties. The empty chair is symbolic that there is a seat waiting for you to experience arts and culture in Orlando/Central Florida. The color red evokes passion, which is the heartbeat of arts and culture.

Orlando International is home to one of the first public art collections in Central Florida and the art has been incorporated into the overall design of the airport. The collection is comprised of works reflecting a variety of styles and media, which also serve as wayfinding elements for the more than 35 mission annual passengers.
