A new research revealed that more than 1,000 Britons a day get injured on skiing holidays after consuming alcohol. After drinking , skiers are 43 per cent more likely to be involved in crash and 3.8 million people have reported injuries on the slope during the past five years.
Direct Line, insurer gathered the data after combining the survey results from 2,000 holidaymakers through a simulator experiment to assess how alcohol affects one’s ability to ski.
Experienced skiers were asked to complete runs on a ski simulator before they were provided alc9ohol to consume and were asked to complete the runs again.
There were huge increase in the likelihood of crashing after drinking six units of alcohol. According to the experiment drinking even three units which is equal to having a large glass of wine will impact the skiers’ confidence and decision making.
As per the survey 5.3 million skiers admit to drinking on the slopes and consume on an average of 6.1 units of alcohol.
It as found that almost one million people claimed to have consumed more than 10 units. Although the drinking-related injuries were minor and 42 per cent of incidents did not permit the holidaymaker to ski the rest of the trip.
Tom Bishop, head of travel insurance at Direct Line mentioned that the number of people reporting accidents on ski slopes as a result of drinking and skiing in recent years is quite alarming. They know that skiing is very much a social holiday, however they want people to enjoy themselves safely.
He went on saying that their practical experiment showed how just a small amount of alcohol can affect decision making. When travelling at 60 miles per hour, it only takes a split second to make a mistake which could cause a serious injury to either yourself or someone else on the slopes.
