As disclosed by the Turkish Hoteliers Federation (TUROFED) this Monday, domestic tourism in Turkey has witnessed 2.6 million holiday reservations in the last two months via the campaign. It was launched in Dec 12 to revamp the tourism sector by providing a maximum of 50 percent discounts, customer friendly payment styles and options, and budget flight options. To quote Mehmet Isler, federation Vice President, ‘’ The number of early reservations that we received for the first five months last year was about 5.4 million. We are more optimistic this year. In 2017, we’ll see how important the domestic market is for the tourism sector and how it shows resistance against crises. I expect it to reach over five million again.’’
However, in the last two years, Turkey has been experiencing a down in foreign tourist arrival. In 2014, 36.8 million foreigners visited Turkey which slump to 25.4 million in 2016 as confirmed by the Culture and Tourism Ministry.
Domestic tourists will counter this downfall especially in early hour bookings as TUROFED believes. Cem Polatoglu, a spokesman for Turkish tour operators believes the deteriorating Turkish lira, high reduction and the “national stance” of Turks supporting their own tourist industry had helped in reestablishing domestic tourism in Turkey.
