Under a 12 month trial approved by the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport
and Main Roads (DTMR), Regional Express (Rex) will operate one return Gulf route flight
via Karumba with effect from Tuesday 31 October 2017.
This follows an earlier three month Government approved trial that operated between April and June this year.
This has been driven by community support that has been growing for the inclusion of
Karumba on the route. The 12 month trial period will allow for a better assessment of
Karumba’s passenger demand, taking into account seasonal fluctuations. This will be
followed by a financial assessment by DTMR to determine if servicing Karumba can be a
permanent inclusion on the Gulf route.
The Gulf route is operated by Rex under contract with QLD DTMR. The Gulf route operates in both directions between Cairns and Mount Isa, servicing the remote communities of Normanton, Mornington Island, Burketown and Doomadgee.
Under the 12 month trail, the Tuesday westbound service ex Cairns and the Thursday
eastbound service from Mount Isa will make an additional stop at Karumba.
