Rift Valley Railways, the private consortium operating freight and passenger services on the railways of Kenya and Uganda, will participate as a buyer company at the 5th International Railway Summit in Kuala Lumpur on 15-17 November 2017.
Rift Valley Railways (RVR) took over the operation of the Kenyan and Ugandan Railways on 1 November 2006. RVR was established in October 2005, when the Government of Kenya and the Government of Uganda jointly tendered a 25-year concession. The Concession Agreement is for the provision of freight services for 25 years and passenger services for 5 years. Under this Agreement, the Kenyan and Ugandan governments retain ownership of the railway infrastructure and facilities whilst RVR operate the trains and maintain the infrastructure.
One railway line under RVR’s supervision runs from the Kenyan port of Mombasa on the Indian Ocean, through Nairobi, and up the Rift Valley to the shores of Lake Victoria. Another leg of the same railway system traverses the Great Rift Valley entering Uganda, passing through Kampala, Uganda’s capital, and continuing West towards the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.Rift Valley Railways’ main objectives include: to coordinate and standardise the management, maintenance, operations and financial performance of the two railway networks; to increase the market share in freight traffic; to foster regional economic integration and growth.
Isaiah Okoth, the company’s Group CEO, will represent Rift Valley Railways at the 5th International Railway Summits and will take part in pre-arranged one-to-one consultation meetings with expert companies.
Mr Okoth has over 30 years of experience working across a variety of sectors in Europe, Middle East and Africa. Prior to assuming his role at Rift Valley Railways, he served as the General Manager of GE’s East African Healthcare business where he pioneered the successful implementation of Africa’s first large scale medical equipment leasing project, covering 98 public hospitals across 47 counties in Kenya.
Organisations and individuals interested in learning more about International Railway Summit and about how they can participate in the event can visit or contact the organisers, IRJ and IRITS Events.
International Railway Summit is a meeting of senior executives representing the world’s key rail operators, rail infrastructure management companies, national and local governments, rolling stock manufacturers and a wide range of solution providers.
International Railway Summit provides a ‘matchmaking’ service between rail industry leaders (‘buyers’) and technical experts (‘suppliers’), based on buyer delegates’ project requirements and the proven expertise of large and small suppliers that we have carefully handpicked. Based on this matchmaking, buyer delegates attend one-to-one consultation sessions with suitable suppliers during the annual summit.
In addition to the one-to-one meetings, delegates also attend a conference programme given by key industry leaders and experts and network over lunches and dinners with their counterparts and industry colleagues from all over the world. International Railway Summit is co-hosted by International Railway Journal and IRITS Events and will take place on 15-17 November 2017 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and on 21-23 February 2018 in Prague, Czech Republic.
