The tug truck, which was pushing the flight to the runway, stopped working because of technical difficulty. As a result, the airport staff members had to push the fully packed jet towards the runway. The flight was completely loaded with luggage of the passengers as well.
The flight was bound for port of Vigo in Spain from the Fiumicino Airport in Rome. The Iberian Airlines jet was scheduled to take off at around 3.10 pm but the jet finally managed to start towards Spain around 4.30 pm.
Flights are normally capable of going backwards on their own. But, the Fiumicino Airport in Rome uses tug trucks to aid the flights to reverse from the gate to the runway, in order to save fuel.
Eleven staff members of Fiumicino Airport were pushing the Bombardier CRJ900 jet backwards from the wheels, while others were giving them instructions. After the tug truck faced technical snag, the Air Traffic Control gave permission to the staff members to push the 36-tonne jet towards the runway.
None of the staff members or passengers was reported to be injured during the unusual incident.
