Rome beefs up security for major event in Vatican

Published on : Thursday, November 26, 2015

Security will be beefed up in Rome starting from Dec. 8 with a ceremony at St. Peter’s Basilica. Rome has already received 400 extra police officers and 140 flak jackets for the Vatican’s imminent Holy Year, expected to bring huge crowds to churches in the Italian capital.

There will be a huge draw of pilgrims as the church is expecting about 33 million followers before it ends on Nov. 20, 2016.

Rome is extremely vigilant about its security, Franco Roberti, Italy’s national anti-terrorism prosecutor  felt that extra police in Rome won’t come at the expense of security in other Italian cities. In the wake of the Paris attack hundreds of solders have been deployed in Rome for investigation and surveillance.
