MTA Railway imageTo ease travel for its customers this Thanksgiving, routine maintenance and temporary construction work at all MTA Bridges and Tunnels crossings will be suspended beginning Noon on Wed., Nov.27th through early Monday morning, Dec. 2nd.

In 2012, 3.8 million trips were taken at MTA Bridges and Tunnels’ seven bridges and two tunnels over the long holiday weekend spanning Wednesday through Sunday. The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge recorded the most trips over the five-day period with 936,000.

The day before Thanksgiving was the heaviest traveled of the five days last year with 875,000 trips.

“We urge drivers to give themselves enough time and use E-ZPass,” said MTA Bridges and Tunnels Acting Vice President of Operations Patrick Parisi. “The Thanksgiving holiday is one of the busiest travel times of the year and planning ahead can help keep traffic moving for everyone.”

Customers who use E-ZPass will also save time by eliminating long waits in cash lines.

Motorists can pick up an E-ZPass On-the-Go tag for $30, plus the toll for that trip, in cash lanes at all MTA crossings except the Henry Hudson Bridge which has a pilot allelectronic tolling underway. It can be used to pay for up to $30 worth of tolls if linked to a credit or debit card or $20 in tolls and a $10 tag deposit if it is not. The tag must be registered within 48 hours after it is first used or it is deactivated.

Drivers can also find out road conditions before they leave home by downloading the free MTA Drive Time travel app, available for both iPhones and Android smartphones, and iPads at the Apple store or Google Play. The app gives real-time travel information for all nine MTA crossings. This is a tool to be used by drivers before they get behind the wheel, or by passengers. It should never be used while driving.
