Namibia is aiming to develop rural tourism. Various tourism ventures in the country have welcomed the government’s efforts towards transforming the tourism industry. Many villagers are now hoping to benefit from the government’s tourism development plan.
Their handmade products can now be targeted towards tourists and locals seeking to buy traditional products, gifts and souvenirs unique to Namibia. Namibian government’s efforts could help transform the business of these villagers into lucrative trade.
The villagers here hope that the government gives a lending hand to rural enterprises, especially those that rely on tourists for more income. Namibia’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism aims to transform Namibia into a competitive tourism destination regionally and globally. They hope that their strategy will turn the local tourism sector into a top-notch industry in the next 10 years.
This can be achieved through support programmes for budding entrepreneurs in the sector, economic empowerment of enterprises and their partners, support to communal conservancies and expansion of rural tourism. Namibia’s tourism sector is the third largest provider to the country’s economy. If current efforts of improving tourism products in a sustainable manner are fortified, tourism will be a key vehicle for growth and national development across all sectors.
