According to the UNWTO, Russia is aiming to become the world’s third most popular tourist destination. This was stated by Oleg Safonov, the head of the Russian Federal Agency for Tourism (Rostourism), at a news conference held at TASS.
Safanov said that Russia was among the 10 most visited countries in 2015 and it needs to make it among the top three this year. Although it will take time, it can be done using Russia’s tourism brand. Since, competition in this sector is tough, it will be not an easy task. Hence, working diligently needs to be prioritized to achieve this goal. When Safanov was asked about the timeframe on achieving this goal, he said, “We need to define this strategic mission and act promptly to achieve this goal.” He added that Russia’s Federal Agency for Tourism had submitted a proposal to the Russian government to commence a project called “Inbound tourism in Russia.” This idea has got support from the government and that is indeed good news.
