After the Cseries aircraft announced by Bombardier, which is set to give Boeing and Airbus a run, Russia announced the new MC-21 its medium range passenger plane that is hailed as superior from all its western counterparts.
The new MC-21 also known as MS-21 is undergoing testing and due to enter production in 2017. The aircraft is determined to keep Russia in the top league of aircraft manufacturing despite high costs. The country is trying to revive its domestic industrial production making it more self contained and less reliant on foreign firms.
“I only want to say that I am absolutely certain that the airliner will be the pride of Russian civil aviation, and that our citizens and foreign people will take pleasure in flights on MC-21,” said Prime minister, Dmitry Medvedev.
There will be two variants in the aircraft, the MC-21 -300 will have 160-211 seats and MC-21-200 will have 139-165 seats. A number of contracts have been signed with domestic and foreign carriers and deliveries are expected by 2018.
The aircraft will be able to serve routes up to 6,400 km (3,976 miles) and the operation cost will be low by 15% from the current generation aircraft. The aircraft is made of composite material and metal which gives the aircraft a special shape. It is much lighter and stronger and a great step in the aviation manufacturing world.
