World renowned marathon runner and politician from Australia, Pat Farmer, started his ‘Spirit of India Run’ from Kanyakumari on January 26, 2016. On February 13, 2016, the athlete entered Maharashtra through the region of Sindhudurg. Culture Aangan, a social enterprise dedicated to promoting sustainable rural tourism, facilitated Pat Farmer’s cultural experiences in Sindhudurg.
The runner was welcomed by Shakti Rane, a highly skilled artist of the social enterprise, who made a portrait of Pat Farmer on a rangoli. An elaborate cultural evening was organized by Culture Aangan in honour of the athlete who is aiming to create awareness of India as a ‘must experience destination’ for Australian travellers. The gathering witnessed Malwan dances by the Shepherd Community and Indian music, celebrating the essence of India.
Speaking about the celebrations, Rashmi Sawant, Founder of Culture Aangan said, “We were delighted to host Mr. Pat Farmer in Sindhudurg and showcase the culture of the region to him through an evening of celebration. We believe that every corner of our country has unique offerings and the best way to connect with these experiences is through the local communities of that region. Mr. Farmer’s visit was a platform for our partners and operators to showcase the offerings of the region to an international audience.”
“Culture Aangan is dedicated to supporting grass root development projects and we aim to bring seasoned travellers closer to experience rural India through our offerings at Alibag, Sindhudurg and Pali (Rajasthan).”
