2016 witnessed the best possible year for Sabah tourism. Despite of headwinds, Sabah received record number tourist arrivals last year. As confirmed by State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, the place received 3.43 million tourists with RM7.25 billion tourism receipts.
To quote the minister, ‘’ International visitors alone saw a 15.4 per cent increase and, unsurprisingly, China was the biggest contributor, recording a 51.8 per cent increase from the year before. Australia was also an emerging market, despite having only one direct flight a week from Perth.’’
He also say, ‘’ Despite all the challenges we faced last year, we still recorded an increase, and achieved a record number.’’ The year 2013 saw 3, 383, 243 tourist arrival at Sabah. However, few high-profile cases of abductions, disappearance of MH370 and similar such incidents had made the tourism industry quite depressed few years back.
He also adds by saying that good airport services and collaboration with Malaysian Airport has helped Sabah tourism to succeed in recent times.
