Last year, the region of San Diego had lured in a large number of tourists thanks to major events including the Major League Basketball All-Star Game, according to the Tourism Authority that had announced this news on Thursday.
The agency had reported about 34.9 million tourists to San Diego in the year 2016 that represents rise from 34.2 million from the previous year.
The tourists who were out of town had ended up spending a record $10.4 billion on local restaurants, shops, attractions and hotels. It was $500 million more than in the year 2015. Joe Terzi, the CEO and President of the Tourism Authority said that San Diego had never enjoyed such an enormous amount of popularity ever before.
San Diego not only boasts of some of the most sought-after tourist attractions like the USS Midway Museum and the San Diego Zoo, but also draws in record number of visitors due to its unique culture and hospitable neighborhoods. Apart from that, the diverse fine dining scene and an award-winning craft beer also inspires tourists to flock to this area.
The San Diego Tourism Authority said that interesting events like Comic-Con International as well as the Amgen Tour of California were also instrumental in driving a large number of tourists to this region.
With an aim to maintain the influx of tourists, the agency has launched an advertising campaign of $12.4 million complete with digital spots, print and television channels.
This campaign is actually based on the video ad of “Happiness Calling”.
The television advertisements would be aired on New York City, Chicago, Seattle, Dallas, Sacramento and San Francisco. Digital ads on the other hand had been run in the United Kingdom and Canada in the first quarter.
The ads would also be run to support new international flight routes to San Diego that would start from this year from Switzerland, Zurich, Germany and Frankfurt.
The officials of SDTA said that the tourism numbers of this year would witness a further boost to the next month’s World Baseball Classic games at Petco Park, the Red Bull Air Race World Series in April, the opening round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup Soccer tournament in July, a sailing race in the month of October and the Breeder’s Cup horse races in November.
