Santorini in Greece is a destination that you will love to visit this year if you are a Gastronomical freak. Year 2013 has been declared as the Year of Gastronomy by the municipal authority of the island.
Not only is the island famous for its food but its culture dates back to the prehistoric times of Akrotiri which highlights the specificity and fertility of the volcanic soil of Santorini. The producers of good food and wine this island also has rich tradition of arts, education, scientific documentation and culture which makes this destination so special.
Starting from October 17, 2013 the conference IMIC 2013 – Tourism & Gastronomy to be held for two days is believed to attract good visitors. With Eric Wolf as the key speaker at the conference and the head of the World Food Travel Association the connoisseur is bound to add magic to the show.
This year Santorini was chosen over Athens because of its famed convection centre Petros M. Nomikos in the region of the Cyclades. There was an intensive seminar incorporated where the focus was on development of culinary tourism “Culinary Tourism Bootcamp”. It also addressed ways to establish and popularize gastronomical strategies to urge tourists to visit these destinations.
In an interview, the American founder and executive director of the World Food Travel Association said that he just discovered the tomato fritter “domatokefte,” and gastronomy could become a cornerstone for tourism here. You have history, but you know, not everyone goes to museums–everyone eats.
Vassilis Zacharakis, head of Santorini’s restauranteurs association, said that what he sees as the biggest obstacle is convincing professionals who have been making a good living for years on one form of tourism, to try something different.
Santorini can become an international culinary destination but with the local disturbances there is little chance of attracting international interest unless the local trouble makers are put to peace.
