Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman who is the Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sports said that the visitor arrivals in this region was around 1.67 million as of April this year. He went on to add that between January and April this year, the tourist arrival figures marked a rise of 17.26% as compared to the corresponding period last year, in his speech in the august House today.
In 2016, Karim had asserted that the state had received as much as 4.66 million visitors ushering in an estimated tourism revenue of RM8.37 billion.
Karim also said that these arrival figures portray an increase of 3.19% against that of the year 2015. The minister said that Malaysia had attracted 26.8 million tourists last year, marking a rise of 4% in tourist arrival growth and bringing about approximately RM82.1 billion in tourism receipts.
He mentioned that the ASEAN markets continue to contribute to the arrivals from Thailand, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore.
He said that the global tourism sector continued to indicate towards a positive growth with the global international tourist arrivals that grew by 3.9% last year. Karim also added that a total of 1.23 billion international tourists were registered worldwide last year.
This indicated that 48 million more tourists had visited Sarawak as compared to 2015.
