Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that tourism in Sarawak needs to tap into the beauty of the hinterlands to attract tourists. He said that the hinterlands are where the natural beauty of Sarawak can be found.
He said steps are being taken to strengthen the air connectivity for improving the state’s tourism industry.
To quote Karim, “The priority now is to get direct flight connectivity with China apart from having more flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur to Kuching, Sibu and Miri.”
About the possibility of current rabies outbreak affecting the tourism industry, he said: “I don’t see it, unless we choose to unnecessarily create alarm and fear of this outbreak.”
According to him, the outbreak is under control. Abdul Karim said the annual BCF served as a platform to create closer bond and understanding not only among town folks, but also Sarawakians as a whole. “It promotes this town as the gateway to the state’s central region and heading towards the vision of Sibu becoming a City of Culture and Festivals,” he said.
