With RM30 billion in state reserves, Sarawak will be able to host more sports events at Asian, international or world level. Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that the reserves can be used to build and develop sports facilities for hosting these top championships.
The minister said, “It is our vision to become a sports powerhouse in the country and that is why we are building many sports facilities that are of world standard. As such, we are quite confident when we bid for the Asia Masters Athletics Championship 2019 and the World Para Aquatic Games 2019 in China in September this year.”
He said that such sporting events will help attract more tourists to Sarawak. Karim said the state government is currently negotiating with several airline companies to increase air connectivity to Sarawak in connection with such sporting events.
“God willing, by the end of this year we hope to bring in more flights to Sarawak especially when we play host to Asia Masters Athletics Championship 2019 and the World Para Aquatic Games if our bids are successful,” Karim added.
