Three Port of Seattle Police Department K9 teams are in California gearing up for Super Bowl duty. The K9’s are part of the Port’s Explosives Detection Unit.
Before and after Super Bowl 50, the Port’s K9’s are part of a national law enforcement effort coordinated by the Homeland Security Administration. The Port’s K9s will be assigned to security efforts at light rail stations near Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
“Our K9 unit is well versed at working with big crowds and transportation systems, so we are uniquely qualified to provide security for the big game,” said Port of Seattle Police Chief Colleen Wilson. “While we hoped to have had the Seahawks representing Seattle on the field, it’s a credit to the professionalism of our teams and excellent training for them to be working this important assignment.”
The Transportation Security Administration is funding the K9 unit’s Super Bowl assignment. All of the Port’s K9s are certified annually by the TSA National Explosives Detection team.
