The incident took place at the airport’s commuter terminal on Saturday morning. The unidentified man forced his way through the exit lane of the security checkpoint and gained access to an area where ticketed passengers were waiting to board.
The man was eventually placed in custody, but not before he made it outside the terminal, in the Airport Operations Area.
DOT spokesperson, Tim Sakahara said that, even after he was detained , a struggle was still there and the man remained combative and at that moment he became unresponsive.
Efforts were made to revive the suspect on the scene by the Honolulu Fire Department, EMS and Airports Rescue Fire Fighters. He was then taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. One law enforcement officer was also injured during the struggle and has been taken to the hospital for treatment.
Honolulu police detectives are investigating the incident.
